Simple truths
One day at the end of my class, I was approached by one of my students. He asked, “Ms. Potts, you’re a Christian, right?”
“Yes.” I said looking up from my desk.
“Well, have you ever noticed that the only preachers worth listening to are the ones who have made mistakes and admit it? Why is that?” he asked sincerely.
Pondering I looked at the young man: a man who had made drastic, life changing mistakes.
“Well, I guess it’s because the message of Jesus Christ is for broken people, not perfect people.” I finally answered.
“Yea, yea!” was his reply followed by high fives among the group of students who had gathered. There was back slapping, laugher, rejoicing.
Those gentlemen rejoiced that the message was for them: the incarcerated, the ones who got it wrong. The ones who are trying to calculate their missteps and find solid ground to go forward in life. The ones seeking a fresh start, a clean slate.
I rejoiced that the message was for me too. Simple truth doesn’t always need a sermon sometimes it just needs to be spoken.
Christianity is not about perfection. It’s about stories of brokenness, regrets, real hurts and losses, all being rewritten into a message of grace, mercy, triumph, and of course, incomprehensible love.
